7th & 8th Grade

Overview

Our 7th and 8th graders comprise the most senior camper division. Tweens and teens enjoy a dynamic summer camp experience, with a combination of traditional day camp activities and a flexible program providing an array of choice-based programming, electives and workshops. Campers also enjoy unique on and off-campus programming, with exclusives just for 7th and 8th graders.

Camper-to-Counselor Ratio: 12

Developmental Milestones

Middle adolescence campers are becoming more independent, and growing away from family ties and influences in favor of social groups and close friends. However, they still desire adult supervision and adult attention to their daily needs. In addition to interests and ambitions rapidly shifting at this age, our staff manage group activities and programming to cater to longer aspirational arcs, interest spans, and self-guided play.

The world at large is also of great interest, and 7th and 8th graders take on a community service project each summer in friendly competition with peers at other campuses.

Program

Division 78 programming offers campers access to the full array of programming at Camps ‘R’ Us, in addition to exclusive activites just for them.

Activities+Choice
While following a structured schedule similar to our other groups, 7th and 8th graders have built-in choice in almost every activity period, and as a group, can shape their daily routine based on a consensus between campers.

The “daily double” also gives 7/8 campers the opportunity to keep popular activities running longer. The fun doesn’t always have to end because a camp period does!

Electives + Workshops
7th and 8th grade campers are given additional programming choices through electives and workshops designed to spark their creativity. Some electives are offered on an ongoing basis, while others may be focused on a particular part of the summer, or directed toward a camp event or tradition. While electives include participants by choice, workshops are predetermined and programmed for all campers.

Electives/Workshops include: Photography, Blogging, CRU News, Graphic Design, Yearbook, CRU Shark Tank, CPR Certification, Food Drive, Athletic Clubs and Game Tournaments.

Off Campus Experiences
Swimming and Bowling are featured off-campus activities for all campers. 7/8 campers enjoy additional exclusives while bowling, including access to video game machines, lounge seating and private lanes. While at the swimming facility, campers have the option to be assessed for swimming ability by our American Red Cross Certified Water Safety Instructors. Campers have access to the main pool and water slides.

A note about swimming: Division 78 campers have the option to be swim-tested. Swimmers have access to most pool facilities at the discretion of the Aquatics Director. Campers who are not swim-tested, or who fail the swim test are considered non-swimmers, and as such, must be in water that is less than chest deep.

Field Trips
7th and 8th graders also enjoy four built-in field trips. In 2017, they include Adventureland, C&B Archery, Pole Position Raceway and Strikeforce Sports/Nerf Rivals. There are two optional trips as well, to see the New York Mets at Citi Field, and a trip to the Movies.

Pre-C2 Training
In anticipation of their future aspirations as members of the Camps ‘R’ Us C2 Program, 7/8 campers are given the opportunity to preview their pending staff training through weekly “assignments,” or curated activities designed to offer an educational opportunity for our campers.

Activities range from leading an activity for younger campers and creating games to helping with camp events and assisting campers with projects.

Traditions
Camps ‘R’ Us has many traditions that have become part of the fabric of our camp community. We celebrate these special events on various days during the summer, and campers participate at a level that is appropriate for their specific age and abilities. These special days augment the daily activity schedule, and are indicated on your campus calendar.

Traditions include: Crazy Hat Day, Picture Day, Wild ‘n Wacky Challenge, Color War, Shades’ BIG Shindig, Pinewood Derby and Talent Show.
