Fighting Childhood Hunger on Long Island with Camps ‘R’ Us
Camps ‘R’ Us, in partnership with Long Island Cares, the Harry Chapin Food Bank, and Adventureland’s Helping Hands Foundation, is sponsoring a food drive at its eleven campuses to raise awareness and help Long Islanders who are living with food insecurity.
In addition to an already overwhelming need to provide families with food, the COVID-19 pandemic has created a significant decrease in food donations to Long Island Cares, and its food pantries are in need of help, now more than ever.
Food Drive Donations, Dates and Distribution
The 2021 food drive runs from camp opening day, Monday, June 28th, and culminates on Camp Kindness Day, Tuesday, July 20th, when over 1,700 Camps ‘R’ Us Campers and Staff will be hosted by Adventureland for an all campus field trip to Long Island’s Favorite Amusement Park.
Donations will be accepted at Camps ‘R’ Us campuses through Friday, July 16th, and will be transported to Adventureland by Camps ‘R’ Us Special Operations to be presented to representatives of the Harry Chapin Food Bank.
Campers and Staff can bring food donations to camp as often as they like, and we are focusing on receiving specific items that Long Island Cares prioritizes (see attached Top 10 Most Needed Items). We are kindly asking that donated products are in boxes, cans, or plastic bottles, and do not require refrigeration. To promote healthy eating, we ask for items that are low in sugar/sodium and free of high fructose corn syrup. Please, no glass jars. For more information, visit www.licares.org.
Adventureland’s Helping Hands Foundation has created a contest, whereby participants who donate a food item to the 2021food drive while at Adventureland will be entered to win a family four pack of Adventureland Season Passes. Participants who make food donations at Adventureland will be given a raffle ticket to complete with their name, date of donation, and email address. The winner will be contacted via email on July 21, 2021.
Camps ‘R’ Us is mirroring this contest at its campuses, whereby Campers and Staff who donate a food item to the 2021 food drive at their Camps ‘R’ Us Campus will be entered to win a family four pack of Adventureland Season Passes. Camp Kindness Day Celebration
On July 20, the camp community will participate in Camp Kindness Day – an event highlighting the practice of intentional kindness that happens every day at American camps. This is an opportunity to raise awareness of the great work that camps are doing to teach kindness in engaging, simple, repeatable, and high impact ways that live on in the daily lives of Campers and Staff members when they return home.
Focusing on our youth and young adults, Camp Kindness Day will help showcase the commitment of the camp community to fostering the core values of kindness, compassion, generosity and care, and integrating those values more fully into every aspect of our society. These values are already part of the fabric of the camp experience. We share the mission for our youth to be nurtured, taught, supported, and inspired to grow into our new generation of kind, compassionate, socially-minded, community-oriented citizens.
Camp Kindness Day will allow camps to incorporate into their July 20 programming fun theme-based activities and cooperative games, cool projects, and memorable moments which will celebrate the value and impact of kindness. Camps ‘R’ Us has chosen Camp Kindness Day to reflect the culmination of its 2021 Food Drive.

It provides nutritional food and support services for a network of more than 374 community-based member agencies, including food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, child care programs, disability organizations, veterans’ services programs and more.
Adventureland’s Helping Hands Foundation was founded with the goal of helping Long Island reach its potential. Since 2013, it has donated nearly $75,000 in scholarships to Long Island students. It has also instituted three annual goods drives at Adventureland: Christmas in July Toy Drive, August School Supply Drive and the Fall Food Drive. Over the past 4 years, it has donated thousands of toys to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island, thousands of school supplies to students and programs in Copiague, Amityville, and Wyandanch School Districts, and thousands of pounds of food to local pantries.
